Well you have read all about what we were learning in year one but now we are year two! We have only been back for a few weeks but we have already done so many things.
In History we have been learning about the Great Fire of London. We have been retelling the sequence of events using podcasting. Keep checking our blogspot to find out what happened!

Butter!
Yes that is right, 1CD made butter. We used our muscles to shake a jar of cream and watched it turn into butter. First the children watch a 5 minute video on the History of Butter. Then we looked at an old butter churn. Finally, the children learned first hand how making butter can be challenging. The teachers sampled the butter and reported back to the class that although it looked liked scrambled eggs, it did in fact taste like butter.
Science Experiment
In Science, we a learning about plants. We studied the parts of a plant using virtual experiments. We discussed each part of the plant and why it is essential to the plant. Next we passed around a tray of seeds & a cut up apple, pear and avocado so the children can see that different plants have different seeds. We reinforced with a discussion that even the food we eat like tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots come from seeds. The children looked at a root window and planted some seeds. After a few days we studied the roots.
Finally we did an investiagation about plants. We took 2 containers and measured out soil and seeds. We were only allowed to change one variable and that was water or no water, so everything else we kept the same. We made sure to use the same type of seeds, same type of soil, same position in light, same number of seeds, same time observed.
After the weekend we noticed that the seeds which had been watered grew tall and the other seeds did not germinate. Even after a week the other seeds did not grow.
In conclusion, 1CD discovered that water is necessary for seeds to germinate and a plant to grow.

1CD's Magical Park
The children worked really hard to create a magical park for the D.T. exhibition. They designed the layout of the park and then in groups the children built a piece of the structure. The children were very excited and had many good ideas including a water fountian, a fence, a bird bath and a football pitch. The park looks fantastic. Well done!
